Increasing Coverage Rates

Increasing immunisation coverage rates is the best way to protect the community against infectious diseases as it reduces the potential for infectious diseases to be spread from person to person. Everyone working in the general practice setting must be vigilant to ensure that immunisation coverage rates remain as high as possible to minimise the risk of a potential outbreak of a vaccine preventable disease.

Targeting Hard to Immunise Groups

Herd immunity is achieved by reducing the number of individuals in the community susceptible to infectious diseases. This increase in protected individuals reduces the potential for infection to transfer from person to person. Hard to immunise populations often bear the brunt of a quickly spreading infectious disease. We must be alert to the risks associated with communities who are under immunised or unimmunised.

Cold Chain Management

Immunisation is considered by many to be the safest and single most effective way of protecting against infectious diseases.1 Vaccine management procedures are an essential part of any immunisation program and are vital in ensuring that vaccines remain potent until they are administered to members of the community.
